A secret set. A vaguely threatening graffiti – bright red across a tour poster. 4PM . PIT. A good few hour’s notice. And so, the return of You Me At Six went from being non-existent to being a Rather Big Thing.
So big that before they’ve even stepped foot on stage, before anyone absolutely knows it’s going to be them, the tent, and dozens upon dozens of rows of people outside, are buzzing with an atmosphere that rivals most other sets. And that was just at the idea of them being there.
So when they do finally step foot on stage, the whole Pit goes absolutely bloody nuts. ‘Room to Breathe’ turns to ‘Loverboy’ into ‘Stay With Me’. Newbie ‘Night People’ gets its first festival airing, met with the same oomph as all that come before it. The band look pleased to be back, but it feels like there’s a little reserve left in their tanks at times, which means that it can only get bigger from here. And that it will.
By the time ‘Bite My Tongue’ screams its way to closing the set the Pit is euphoric. All that matters is, thanks to the worst kept secret at Reading, You Me At Six are back, and the ‘Night People’ era has begun with a crammed and raucous bang.
