Nothing But Thieves: “I want people to be amazed, in quotation marks”

Later on today Nothing But Thieves make their debut on the mainstage at Reading Festival. The band probably have a bunch of things to get ready ahead of their slot but we grabbed frontman Conor Mason for a chat.

He’s feeling “a little bit nervous but in a good way. It’s a bit crazy, I haven’t really taken it in yet. I used to come to Reading as a punter as a kid and whenever you saw the list of mainstage bands, you knew they were there for a reason. It feels good. It feels big.”

Playing the mainstage is something Conor has had his eyes on since he was a kid. “When I was thirteen, I used to come here so to be able to play that stage is outrageous. We got lucky.” There’s a view to “gather new fans” from today. “It might sound arrogant but (I hope people take away) that we’re a really good live band and we amplify the record. I want people to be amazed in quotation marks. I want them to be really shocked that we can do it live. I want to send them away thinking fuck, I’ll always remember that show.”

As for the rest of the weekend, Conor wants to watch Die Antwoord and Foals before returning on Sunday to see Biffy Clyro and Black Foxxes. Then there’s Nothing But Thieves’ show at Brixton Academy. And beyond that? Album two.

“We’ve already written most of the second album and it’s already in a good shape. We’ve thirty ideas so far. We’ve been writing constantly since the first album was recorded.” There’s a block of time to record at the end of January in L.A. “It’s sounding bigger and better. I just want to amplify what we have already. Keep touring, keep growing, do it the old fashioned way. I think so. it’s come with touring so much, we’ve found a part of our sound that we love the most.”
