HMV have reported, via The Scotsman, that in the run up to Christmas one turntable was sold every minute. (That’s 60 an hour, fact fans.)
HMV’s chief executive Ian Topping explained, “Entertainment products form a major part of the Christmas shopping list. The gift of the year in 2015, though, has to be a turntable as we see a huge resurgence in the sales of vinyl.”
The news shouldn’t come as that much of a shock though as the chain of stores have doubled floor space for vinyl over the past few years and in 2015, sales of vinyl were approaching the 2 million mark for the first time in twenty years.
HMV aren’t the only ones to see an increased attention on vinyl though with record players being Amazon’s biggest selling audio product in the run up to Christmas and John Lewis reporting a 240% increase in record player sales earlier in the year. Even Tesco started selling vinyl records recently as a “trendy gifting option.”
We’ll stick to Banquet, ta and remember kids, the plural of vinyl is vinyl.
