‘This Could Be Heartbreak’ nails the contrast between light and dark.

From the initial chimes of ‘I Bring The Weather With Me’, through its charging guitars and layered synths, to the melodic, unforgettable chorus, it’s a winning opener for The Amity Affliction.
Title track ‘This Could Be Heartbreak’ has a poppier edge overlaid with the consistent screams of Joel Birch. Crashing into ‘Nightmare’, it follows a similar vein, growing from pop rock chorus to growling metal breakdown and back again.
‘All Fucked Up’ is the ballad of the hour, with a chorus made for singalong encores (“we’re all fucked up, it’s true”) and female vocals that contrast with the roars of the outro.
‘Fight My Regret’ takes an entirely different approach to the subject of mistakes made, racing from start to finish in a blur of thrashing drums, raucous, spitting vocals, and desperate screams.
‘This Could Be Heartbreak’ nails the contrast between light and dark, optimism and realism; it’s a strong effort from the Australians. Kathryn Black
